Fierce Anti-Gay Rights Lawmaker: 'I'm Gay'

The Buzz: State Sen. Roy Ashburn (R-Calif.), the fierce opponent of gay rights who was arrested last week for drunk driving after leaving a gay nightclub, confirmed in a radio interview Monday that he is gay.

Oh my, my. Many gay people often suspect that the very vocal haters are, in sad fact, deep closet cases, and we often see confirmation of that hypothesis.

As I did, this fellow has just turned the world upside down for his family, especially the children, and it will be a while before they are able to move along.

His sad lie: Ashburn, a 55-year-old divorced father of four, claimed his 15-year crusade against proposed gay-rights laws in the California statehouse stemmed from his desire to vote the way his constituents wanted.

Nope. He seeks to delude himself along with the rest of us. He cloaked himself with the antigay rhetoric to deflect any question that might arise as he went through the rest of his life.

The rhetoric was his beard.
