Bill Maher: New Rule: Let's Not Fire the Teachers When Students Don't Learn -- Let's Fire the Parents

The Buzz: New Rule: Let's not fire the teachers when students don't learn - let's fire the parents. Last week President Obama defended the firing of every single teacher in a struggling high school in a poor Rhode Island neighborhood. And the kids were outraged. They said, "Why blame our teachers?" and "Who's President Obama?" I think it was Whitney Houston who said, "I believe that children are our future - teach them well and let them lead the way." And that's the last sound piece of educational advice this country has gotten - from a crack head in the '80's.

I've been there and done that. You can't teach an oak stump. And yes, access to reading material in the home is the hands down the nĂºmero uno indicator of how well the children will do.

Forget those private schools and buy a few books. Subscribe to a few magazines. Make that a lot. Make sure some contradict the others. The peeps need to know a lot of mess ain't settled yet.

Yes, that applies to whatever you're calling creationism these days.

Maybe take vacay in educational places. That state park likely has several children's programs. Do them all, some together. Read a lot about it before you go. Write a lot about it when you return.

Ditto for historical sites.

Remember: Velvet Jesus and Elvis on the wall do not help.

I circled every "the" in my mother's Bible. She never batted an eye. I was reading.
