Sorry, Vegans: Brussels Sprouts Like to Live, Too

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12/22/science/22angi.html

The book being reviewed is at

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d.html/ref=mp_s_a_1?qid=1261961253&a=0316069906&sr=8-1

It's called "Eating Animals."

I've been waiting for this, and it's going to present problems for thinking vegans and vegitarians out there.

The veggies like to live too.

Yep, those plants we like to eat avoid bad stuff and seek good stuff.

Are they thinking entities? Who knows? Some would argue that they're not thinking. Instead, they're just responding acording to some chemical design.

Well, I hate to burst a bubble here, but humans are much they same, as are those tasty beasties. We're all just a bunch of chemical responses.

There was a book back in the 70s called "The Secret Lives of Plants" that went down this same road. Of course, it was published as a part of the counter-culture, and it didn't see a lot of attention, much less respect.

It also didn't have much science behind it.

Will this one do better? Again, who knows? But the conversation should be interesting.
