NYTimes: Complications Grow for Muslims Serving Nation http://s.nyt.com/u/DOj
An excellent read, especially if you see the US as a Christian nation. We are not. The US is a nation of many religions, none superior to the others.
We really need to get over this religious nonsense. It's holding us back. Can we just get on with what we do and do not know?
What do we know? That's a real poser. Outside mathematics and a little physics, I suspect we do not know all that much.
However, it's what we believe that gets us into trouble. We can change what we know by learning something new. The problem is that we generally change what we believe on the cusp of death.
Now that's a real problem, and we seem to prefer visiting that problem on others.
Let's step away from the current mess and take a gander at history. There ya go! Indians! Those heathens who lived here long before we even knew where here was.
They had religion. A perfectly good religion. A religion that served them well. And then we showed up.
How Christian has been our engagement of the Indians?
Remember now, it's a sin to lie, even to yourself. While you're here, let's recall the ever so Christian enslavement of the Africans just so we could grow a little cotton.
Wanna make it current? Is a gay man, much less a gay couple, welcome in your Christian church? I thought not.
Your Christian self should be grateful the Muslims are willing to serve in the military. They are more likely to die that way.
And isn't that a good reason to let those queers in the military too?
